Один молодой человек пишет:
"Сегодня возник разговор со своей девушкой по поводу разницы "arm" и "hand" — она совсем не знает английского, а я на нём так часто разговариваю, что многое приходится объяснять, и зачастую сам многое для себя понимаешь. А сейчас…
Ведь в русском языке перевод каждого из этих слов "рука", но имеем-то мы в виду или руку целиком, или же её кисть. Тогда почему мы "hand" переводим как "рука", а не "кисть"? Все эти "hand in hand" - рука об руку, to keep in hand — держать в руках, to give a hand, например…
У меня такое ощущение, что это только на глубинном каком-то уровне понимается, а словами выразить закономерность не могу.
Не поможете?"
Отчего ж не помочь, попробую.
Но прежде еще раз скажу, что язык не только иностранный, но и в первую очередь родной постигается только через чтение и вдумывание в слова в различных контекстах.
А нам кажется, что мы все давно знаем, и шпарим дальше, не останавливаясь.
И только иностранный язык заставляет нас, да и то не всех, искать ответы и думать.
Как я искала ответ?
Может ли употребляться слово arm в качестве метафоры?
Может: “The Arm of God”
The Arm of God is a spiritual Arm, and cannot decay; all the attributes of god abide, and change not.
(The Arm of a man is an Arm of flesh, and consequently may decay, grow weak, or be withered.)
