CHARLES DICKENS
OLIVER TWIST

FAGIN'S GANG

The next morning when
Oliver woke up he saw Fagin making some coffee by the fire. The old man did not see that Oliver was awake. He opened a secret hole in the floor and took out a small box. He took out a gold watch from the box and said:
 "Clever dogs! Clever dogs!
They didn't tell the police about me. Good men! Good men!"
Then
he took six more watches and some rings and other pieces of jewellery from the box.
Suddenly
he saw Oliver watching him. Fagin looked at Oliver for a few second and spoke in a kind voice.
 "
Did you see any of these pretty things?" – said Fagin. "They are mine, Oliver! They're all I have When I get old."
Oliver thought it was a little strange that man with so many beautiful watches lived in a dirty, old house.
Oliver got up and went to the corner of the room to wash his face. When he turned round, the box was not on the table any more. Just then, the Dodger returned to the house with one of the other boys. The other boy was called Charley Bates. The Dodger took some bread and some meat from inside his hat and they all sat down for breakfast.
 "What
did you get?" said Fagin to Dodger and Charley.
 "Four handkerchiefs,"
said Charley and gave them to Fagin.
 "Very good.
Teach Oliver how to pick out the labels with a needle", said Fagin.
After breakfast,
Charly and the Dodger played a very strange game with Fagin. The old man put on a coat. Then he put watch, a wallet, and some handkerchiefs into his pockets.
Next,
he walked up and down the room. Sometimes he stopped near the fire or the door. He looked like an old man shopping in the street. The Dodger and Charley followed him while he walked up and down the room. Suddenly the Dodger stood on the old man's feet and Charley pushed him. While they did this, the two boys quickly took all the things from Fagin's pockets.
This game was played several times. If Fagin knew that one of the boys' hands was in his pocket he would stop the game and they would start again.
Oliver enjoyed watching the game very much.
When
the boys went to see any work out, Fagin said to Oliver: "Can you take this handkerchief from my pocket without my feeling it?"
Oliver did as Fagin asked.
 "
You're very clever, Oliver!" said Fagin. "If you learn as quickly as this, you'll soon be a great man!"
