Mrs. Mann took Mr. Bumble into a small kitchen and gave him a drink of gin from the bottle she kept in the cupboard.

"And now about business", said Mr. Bumble. "The child that we called Oliver Twist is nine years old today. We still don't know where his mother came from or who his father is," said Mr. Bumble.

"Why is he called Oliver Twist?" asked Mrs. Mann.

"I decided to call him that. We name the orphans in the alphabetical order. The one before him was S. This one was a T, so I named him Twist," replied Mr. Bumble.

"You are very clever, Mr. Bumble," said Mrs. Mann.

"Well, well, perhaps I am," replied Mr.Bumble. "Oliver is too old to stay here now, so I am going to take him back to the large workhouse. Let me see him at once."

Mrs. Mann took Oliver into the room to see Mr.Bumble.

"Will you come with me, Oliver?" asked Mr.Bumble.

Oliver was going to say that he would be happy to leave, when he saw Mrs.Mann looking at him angrily.

Oliver tried to look sad. Mrs.Mann kissed him goodbye.

Mr.Bumble took him to see the owners of the workhouse.

"Boy, listen to me. Do you know that you are an orphan?" asked the fattest gentleman at the top of the table.

"What's that, sir?" asked Oliver.

"The boy is very stupid," said another gentleman.

"Do you know that you don't have parents?" said the first gentleman. "You are here to learn how to work. You will begin to work tomorrow morning at six o'clock."
